- Set the table listing View By popup menu setting (within the Manage Database dialog) to custom
- Set the field listing View By popup menu setting (within the Manage Database dialog) to custom
- Set the custom function listing View By popup menu setting (within the Manage Custom Functions dialog) to custom
- Make sure to set or clear any default global fields - creating a script to do this is helpful

For my style of development, Custom beats Alphabetical every single time.

And set the toolbars and default styles (line, color, fill ) to your preferences.
I like having the Formatting toolbar on and Rulers off, but when opening a served file, Filemaker will return those to the state they were in when last opened locally.

Ya...that reminds me - here's some more:
Inspector Prefs (related to toolbar defaults): Units of Measurement (inches, metric, pixels)

One thing that may be good to add to this list, (on close) save the file on the layout used for the "Low impact startup". Especially since FM will always open the file on that last layout that was viewed...even when you have the switch to layout option set.
